What’s your purpose of life?

What’s your purpose of life?

One thing I’m always thinking about is what are we human beings living for? People around me always seem to be in a rush, have many, many obligations and don’t seem to enjoy their life as much as they should. They work to live… and they live to survive instead of live to make the best of a life. And yes I have to admit I’m also quilty for getting in to the daily grind quite often. Lately I started to think about my wishes again, what do I want? What am I living for? I’m not living to only serve the society by earning money and spending it again so the cirkle goes on and on and on…. no I want more! I want to discover, enjoy and create my own adventures, I want to be free as a bird.

Flower lady

Flower lady

2 months ago I made some pictures of Gea Veenstra again (she also was one of the first models I’ve worked with). This time I wanted to go back to where I began. A more simplify kind of style. And because I love flowers and soft colors I had to use something with that beautiful soft atmosphere again.

Model: Gea Veenstra
Photography, make-up art and styling: Stephanie Verhart

Curious about our older pictures I made of Gea? Check out this album!

The place they call home

The place they call home

The place they call home is a story based on the daily situation in Botshabelo in Magaliesburg, South Africa.

The differences of supply in primary needs are huge in this world. Every human has the need for food, a place to sleep, safety, health, love and learning. But not everyone is provided well. What I’ve seen in South Africa is that people stay positive in an amazing way, most of the people seem quite happy and we can see this as inspiration, but also as a sign to help. Why? That’s the part you will see in the reportage (video) we’ve made and which will be online soon.

Here you can find more about the Botshabelo community, the amazing initiative of Marion and Con Cloete.

“The greatest glory in living
lies not in never falling,
but in rising every time we fall.”
― Nelson Mandela

Backstage

Backstage

Here is a backstage video I’ve never showed before on my personal blog. It’s from a few months ago during my study at IADE Creative university in Lisbon. It’s the ‘making of video of’ a beauty shoot with model Emmy. And with the help of my assistant Helma Scholten.

The meaning of words

The meaning of words

For many words are vague meanings, sometimes even several meanings. And then you also have the words that are interpreted differently per person. That fascinates me and causes my interest. I want to develop a comprehensive book in which various words will be dedicated. Now you may immediately think of a dictionary, but no! The book I’m going to make will serve as inspiration and contain both text and pictures. What I want is to encourage people to see things from a multifaceted perspective.

The texts in the book will be based on the extensive research I’m currently doing. This research contains information of the internet, books and various people. By interviewing several people I get a look at the different meanings of words and feelings about certain words.

So now I’m looking for people who are willing to collaborate on this research. (There are no requirements, because I need the opinion of all kind of people.) We will talk about several words, what they mean to you etc. and I will make some pictures for in the book. The announcement of which words will be processed in the book will be later.

What else do we need?

What else do we need?

“Satisfied I take a zip of my red wine and turn my eyes back to my book. The radio in the background is playing some jazzy music which fits the atmosphere at the terrace perfectly. I also hear some soft and seemly background noise, of the people who are passing by and the birds who are cheerful flying from side to side. The sun which regularly shines through the clouds makes the setting complete.”

Perfection

Another moment which feels like perfection. But what is perfection? And does it exist? Well for me it does. I believe that people can make their own perfection. They can give their own association to the word.
In the dictionary you can find some ‘vague’ definitions of perfection:
“The quality or condition of being perfect.”
“The highest degree of a quality”
“The act or fact of perfecting”

But after reading that it’s still a question for me. So I’ve been looking around on the internet for some more information, or maybe I should just call it opinions about perfection. I ended up on a page with al kind of quotes. Most of the people think about perfection as a kind of top in a career. A kind of top which is too hard to achieve.
“If people reach perfection they vanish, you know.”
― T.H. WhiteThe Once and Future King
“If you look for perfection, you’ll never be content.”
― Leo TolstoyAnna Karenina
“Have no fear of perfection – you’ll never reach it.”
― Salvador Dalí
“Nobody’s perfect. We’re all just one step up from the beasts and one step down from the angels.”
― Jeannette WallsHalf Broke Horses
Somehow I agree with these opinions. We can’t be perfect because there’s no exact definition for perfection. If it is the ultimate top we indeed can’t reach it. And I think I don’t even want to reach it. Because what makes you feel better as just being yourself and being accepted by the people your beloved with. But we can see some situations as perfect. Although, I do see some as perfect. Some moments. Those moments where I can’t imagine it to be better. Where I don’t want to imagine it to be better. My moments of perfection. As described in the first phrases.

Small details

I’ve always enjoyed a lot of things, but now I can enjoy it even more. I just empty my head by walking around and take a look at the small details. From seeing some incredible architecture, to the water I hear flowing and people who I see smiling. The things some people may never see or hear from different perceptions, because they don’t try to see the world that way. And maybe it sounds strange the way I write it, but just try it. Enjoy what you want to enjoy and just live your own scenario. Because only what you like the most and the details that suit you can make things ‘perfect’ for you. Not what other people told you to be perfect. My definition of perfection is to see what your ultimate moments are. The moments you won’t wish to be better. The moments which are just ‘perfect’ to you.

Exploring

Exploring

Time is hunting me, although that’s how I’m feeling right now. I’m already in Lisbon for almost 5 months now. And in a few weeks I have to go back to Holland again. One year ago, the moment when the idea of going to Lisbon to study photography came up feels like yesterday. But now it’s almost over. I had such an amazing time. I’ve learned a lot about lightning and technical aspects of photography, but the thing I’ve learned about the most is the knowledge of life and  to be self-conscious of my personal growth. Knowing who I want to be and what I want to do makes me feel delightful. And yet I’ve decided to make an even larger road for my self-conscious. Next semester I will be following a minor concepting. Becoming self conscious isn´t something that can happen on an expert level, it´s the idea and feeling of becoming more and more yourself. But there will always be more to learn about yourself and being open for that will give you a step forward. And why am  I typing this? Just because it also influences my photography, my creative mind. It’s very nice to know the technical aspects of photography, but I still prefer to do my own thing. Or maybe mix my own thing with the extra technical information to create more intense pictures.

One of the things I made in Lisbon is an extreme beautyshoot for my fashion class and with extreme I mean extreme edited. Where I normaly take quit long to do a nice make-up and do the hair, I’ve added a very fast (not very good) make-up and hairstyle to the model. With this pictures I wanted to show my photoshop skills. It takes some hours to do, but I felt really inspired after a photoshop class of one of my teachers where I’ve learned some new usefull skills. In this class he showed us how he photoshopped a picture step by step on a very big display. It was also the 2nd time I was working in the studio.

And I have to say that I still prefer to use locations for photoshoots. Although the good thing about the class studio photography is that I really like working with artificial lights. I can’t wait to get my own one day to experiment more with lights.

When I look what I’ve accomplished in 2013 I feel very happy. I didn’t had special intensions, I just had dreams and a lot of motivation. A lot of dreams must be there to become the truth. You just need people who support you and a strong will. So maybe putting goals for a new year isn’t that bad after all? Okay maybe the intention of why you have set your goals is wrong in that case, but your goals aren’t wrong. I believe it’s good to challenge yourself because it’s the only way to set a step forward. No I can’t make a list of dreams I’ve fulfilled last year, I can just say that I’ve traveled a lot and that’s one of the things I truly love. I’ve been traveling trough Europe for a schoolproject with Mjuks goes Europe (Switserland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Austria and Germany, I’ve been to Berlin, Germany with a very good friend to remind our internship from 2009 there, I moved to Lisbon, Portugal to live there for half a year and I’ve traveled to Madrid, Spain just for fun. To travel is a dream that always goes on for me. During travels you meet new people, see new things and get new perspectives of the life you’re living. Traveling gives a big load of inspiration and energy. So for me traveling is a lot more than just a dream, it’s a way of exploring new things and a very small try at understanding more of the world and people, or maybe it’s just a try to learn more about myself?

Here are some pictures I made during my travels last year.
