Backstage with Wieteke@Innocence model agency

Backstage

A few days ago I did the first real shoot for my graduation project. After some tests, with facts about rhetoric in my mind, my strategy set and an extra new challenge/small test with an analog disposable camera from Hema I did this shoot in katwijk aan Zee. For now I can say I’m really happy with the results! Coming week I have two more shoots in the same theme to go. Also one new big challenge, a duo shoot. My goal is to make one strong, catchy series of these 3 shoots. It’s fashion and beauty with a very strong focus on expressions and emotions. I want to hit the people who look at this series… so it’s not about just showing ‘beautiful’ images with make-up and nice clothes, it’s about telling a story! The theme I got for this series is black widow, but I will tell more about that part later!

Meet newborn Jasmijn!

Newborn

About 2 weeks ago I made pictures of this little girl. Again a newborn who refused to sleep after drinking her milk. It’s amazing how she stares at the camera with her beautiful, glassy, big blue eyes.. and at the last picture (I post here) she almost falls asleep. Isn’t she just adorable?

A test shoot and some more..

Test shoot

Last week I photographed Beau, her name already says it…she’s beautiful! It was a shoot to test some of my new make-up items and I’m very happy with the results!
First we shot some ‘pure’ well mostly about fresh make-up shots and after that I did put the accent at her lips. For this shoot the base, colors and highlights were very important.

A thing I normally don’t do inside with sunny daylight is using my GOLD reflecting shield! I always take the sun away by closing my white curtain on one side (as a kind of diffuser for the sun) I’m always afraid that my pictures will get an ugly yellow glue (or way too hard light) and that it won’t fit the environment. Well this time I choose to try using my gold shield.. because I wanted my highlights to show of a bit better and a warm bronze color for my model did also fit very nicely. I think I’m going to do this more often! You can see the huge difference between the upper and lower pictures, it gives a whole different atmosphere. A day in summer.. versus a day in winter! As make-up artist it’s important you can apply techniques like highlighting/shading, but it’s also important as photographer to know how make-up effects will be shown the best. And even if a make-up artist didn’t highlight/shade it’s important you can do it as photographer.. (yeeh to photoshop – dodge/burn!)

Inspiration

Of course I was busy with my graduation again as well. I’m so inspired by some old writers(poets), philosophers and techniques behind classic and modern rhetoric. I hopped in at a poem of Garmt Stuiveling (sorry it’s in Dutch, I’ve tried to translate it somehow properly below!):

“Geloof niet wat de praters dwaas vertelden;
geloof niet wat de schrijvers wijs vermelden;
geloof noch woord, noch boek, noch sterrentaal
– geloof alleen u-zelf, en dan nog zélden.
(Garmt Stuiveling, Wordend kristal) “

“Do not believe what the talkers tell foolishly;
do not believe what the writers mention wisely;
faith nor word, neither book nor stars language
– Believe only your choosing, and even then rarely.
(Garmt Stuiveling Becoming crystal) “

Oh and I found so much more awesome stuff and theories. Another story I want to recommend to read is “the medium is the message”of philosopher Marshall McLuhan.
It’s funny because my graduation time is starting to mean so much more for me as just graduating. It’s a whole way of life, a road in which I explore who I really am and want to be. I became so much more self-conscious already. Just by thinking, thinking and even more thinking! I’ve also made some plans with a good friend to set up a second company.. something that comes from deep inside, something we love! Something in which we combine art, political subjects and a sense of pureness. But some more information about that subject will follow up later… first my graduation.

Travel, inspire and create!

Travel, inspire and create!

After a very impressive trip through Indonesia I got lots of new inspiration for my graduation project and photography.
In July we started our trip, we travelled from Jakarta -> -> Bogor -> Bandung -> Jogjakarta -> Malang -> Kalibaru -> Bali. We were at Java most of the time and ended our trip at Bali, for a few days of relaxing (and ofcourse another sightseeing trip!) I was pretty happy we spent most of our time in Java, because it’s not that touristic and has many, many treasures! We’ve experienced the muslim culture in a whole different way, everywhere around us people were doing ramadan at Java. Fasting teaches man to restrain themselves and learns features such as discipline, stamina and above all self-control. It also teaches respect towards others and Allah. Every day that one fixed, one can live like this as a victory. It teaches people to be in control of appetites and passions. Above all, it makes people obedient to Allah. I respect how deeply these people believe. I think mostly I understand it much more as I did before. We were driving around and at all the big roads where huge traffic jams. This was because of the sugar celebrations and Idul Fitri, all the muslim people in Java where visiting their family. They where all coming together to celebrate the end of the ramadan, such an awesome sign of appreciation. Bali however also was quite impressive… going by boat from Java to Bali felt like going to another country. That’s when you notice how much impact believe has at culture. At Bali most of the people are Hindustani. People do all have their own offering places, they make many offers and above all they believe in reincarnation. When we arrived at Bali a woman came at the boat with some flowers and incense to make an offer and from that moment on, we saw people offering everywhere!

Most awesome places!

We also saw many impressive places, I just show ‘a few’ of my pictures because otherise I will put hundreds of them here. Well sorry those are a lot already!

Well that was enough about the travelling.. As I told I got some inspiration from the cultural part and art in indonesia.. It’s been so long since I’ve been painting the last time and you know what, I started painting again! Painting to get new sights in to my creative live, but also painting to put my feelings in there…

I did also test some new make-up with beauty Beau Veldkamp and my sister and I did finally made the pictures we promised our parents a long time ago.

Soon I will post more updates with new work.

Backstage photo update

Backstage photo update

In the past weeks I’ve been quite busy again. This time not only doing make-up and making pictures but also thinking about new creative concepts and how to link my photography with my graduation project. I’ve also set some goals for the future. To expand my own creativity I’m going to work with large teams more often. I really like to see other people work, putting something extra in to the projects.

My first wedding!

About 3 weeks ago I photographed my first wedding. It was something I really enjoyed. A part of photography I normally barely do (action/spontaneous shots). At the wedding I was just there as extra photographer, so the booked photographer catched the most important shots like the awesome close-ups of rings, the shoot of the bride and groom etc. For me it was the challenge to go for the action shots and still make an interesting story for my portfolio. I think it was pretty good for me to do something like that, because normally I always shoot stylized pictures. So though I wasn’t at the foreground at the wedding I still love some of the shots I made. They are just so real and spontaneous! Soon I will show some of photo’s and collages I made. Because of the lack of some very good material I can’t be booked for wedding shoots yet. For this wedding shoot I’ve borrowed materials from my school. But it in the future I will for sure be able to photograph weddings as well!

Except for the wedding I also did a family shoot. Normally I only make the family pictures of my own family. So this was a new challenge which I really loved to do as well!

And than there was a free work project I did plan with an aweome team. I did organize the shoot, find the concept, arranged the styling and made the pictures, Rachma Heuvel designed the headpieces, Kris Hummel did the make-up art and Sanne and Lena did the modelling. I’m also very happy with the results of that shoot!

For now many backstage shots of the production and post production of the shoots/wedding.

Update

Update

The past weeks I totally forgot to update my blog because those weeks have been very, very busy. Besides the cool photography and make-up art jobs I had, I’m also busy with my thesis and graduation project, getting better at running long distances and finding a job abroad for after my graduation.

Unfortunately I can’t show much photo’s at the moment because most of the jobs I did were private photography jobs for clients. But the thing I’m going to show is pretty cool. Last week we shot the summer 2016 collection for Smashed Lemon and Superstition at some cool hotspots in Amsterdam. I did the make-up art.

The other pictures I posted are some snapshots of my holiday of which I wrote last month.

And an awesome upcoming project… I’m going to photograph my first wedding next week!

One of my clients last week!

One of my clients

Last week I had some really beautiful clients. And of this one particular girl I would like to share some work.

These photo’s are from a ‘friends’ shoot which Gea (an awesome model who I photographed before) gave her friends as surprise. I really like working with people who’ve never been for the camera before. They are always a bit scared but while the shooting starts they get more and more convenient for the camera. And eventually they pose like real models!
We decided to do this shoot on location, because it’s gives a more special ‘feeling’ as just a simple background.

Here is what my client thought about the shoot:

Dutch:
“De shoot met Stephanie vond ik heel relaxed. Ik had nooit echt een shoot gedaan en was ook een beetje zenuwachtig hiervoor, maar Stephanie gaf tips en trucjes waardoor het een ontspannen sfeer was. Ik heb genoten en ben nog steeds aan het nagenieten van de foto’s!”

English:
“I thought the shoot with Stephanie was very relaxed. I had never really done a shoot before, so I was a little nervous, but Stephanie gave tips and tricks which made the atmosphere very relaxed. I enjoyed the shooting and I still have something to reminisce: the pictures!”

Model: Sinem
Hair: Gea Veenstra
Make-up, photo: Stephanie Verhart

Today I finally worked at location again. I think I didn’t work at location for almost one year. So I was very excited to go.
I wanted to make 2 things, some fashion related work but also some more commercial work because I don’t have enough of that in my portfolio yet. I got to work with model Tjitske Annie Vries @Innocence Model agency she is such a pure beauty. I really loved working with her. And the shoot itself was awesome, I played a bit with the sun, shadows, backgrounds and angles. And ofcourse the styling and make-up art. Here some backstage shots of today.

Not every newborn likes to sleep!

Not every newborn likes to sleep!

Exactly as the title says, not every newborn likes to sleep! Normally the newborn babies (babies younger than 14 days) fall a sleep after drinking their milk. Or at least fall a sleep after a hour of curious looking at the camera. But this little girl just didn’t. I love my job and I love catching moments of every person/child/baby the way they are. The same for this shoot, it was so cute how this little girl kept on looking at the camera. We’ve been shooting for almost 3 hours and the most of the time she wanted her pacifier and just lay at her side and watch. Ofcourse I don’t force babies in to any poses during a shoot. So if it doesn’t go naturally to put the baby in to a pose (when she works against) you just shouldn’t do that! Always think about the babies needs, comfort and safety first. So this was a total different newborn shoot, luckily I made the parents very happy and this pictures also make me smile! Isn’t she adorable?
